What a sewer installation actually costs — and why we won't quote sight unseen
Anyone quoting a sewer replacement without seeing the line is guessing. Every job we quote is scoped, measured and written up. These are the factors that move the number.
Length of run
Distance from the building to the municipal connection point.
Depth of the line
Deeper lines require more excavation, shoring and dewatering.
Site access
Tight lot access, landscaping, decks and outbuildings all affect method and cost.
Existing pipe material
Clay, cast iron, Orangeburg and PVC transitions each add specific work.
Municipal connection
Whether the tie-in is at the property line or requires work into the roadway.
Restoration required
Concrete, asphalt, driveways, sidewalks, landscape and interior finishes.
Urgency
Emergency after-hours mobilisation vs. planned scheduled installs.

Trench or trenchless — the honest guidance
Trenchless is marketed hard, but it isn't always the right method. Here's how we choose, without upselling.
Open-cut (trench) excavation
Required when…
- The line is collapsed, offset or the host pipe has failed structurally.
- There are significant bellies or sag that trenchless cannot correct.
- The lateral is Orangeburg, badly deformed clay, or has multiple offsets.
- The tie-in point at the municipal main needs to be rebuilt.
- Depth, soil conditions or utility conflicts make pulling unsafe.
Trenchless (pipe bursting / lining)
Considered when…
- The existing pipe is structurally continuous and correctly sloped.
- Access pits can be safely dug at both ends of the run.
- There are no significant bellies, sharp offsets or collapses.
- Yard restoration cost would exceed the premium for trenchless.
- Utility clearances at depth allow the pulling head to pass safely.
Sewer work is regulated, involves confined-space and excavation hazards, and requires municipal permits and inspections. We do not recommend homeowner DIY on sewer laterals or mains — the safety, liability and re-work costs are not worth it.
